A good statement of artistic intention should be: An outline of a clear and feasible artistic intention. It should also show that you have considered
- Alternatives - different ways of doing things
- A variety of perspectives - ways of looking at a work or problem
- Imaginative Solutions - ways of solving problems that you can foresee, ways of getting the job done in time.
Here are some guidelines OR A CHECKLIST as to how to write a good statement of artistic intention
SET RULES and LIMITATIONS - Choose your Weapons
We know that creating deliberate limitations can enhance creativity. If you create a set of rules to limit how you approach a project it will allow you to be more creative within those limitations. You will spend less time getting distracted and more time focusing on working with the materials that you allow yourself to work with.
EXAMPLE: “Because most of the music I have heard in the …...genre uses only acoustic guitar and voice, I will limit myself to these two instruments. I will also use verse-verse-chorus-verse-chorus song structure."

SHOW YOUR INFLUENCES
Describe and show examples of similar works or works that inspire you in some way. In your process journal this could be youtube clips, audio files or just a written description.
EXAMPLE: "In this project I hope to combine influences from North Indian Classical music with a Hip-Hop style beat. Here are a few of the artists and pieces of music that I am taking influence from"

IDENTIFY YOUR KNOWLEDGE GAP
Consider the steps that you will have to take in order to complete the project. Consider what you are setting out to do as well as what the project (teacher) requires you to do.
EXAMPLE: "I don't actually know how to play any instruments or have any musical training whatsoever so writing a song is going to be a huge challenge for me. On the other hand, I know that I am being assessed more on my process and creative thinking than anything else. Maybe I could learn how to play 3 chords on a piano or a guitar and limit myself to the use on those 3 chords. Another thought that I had was to sequence the music using computer software, that way I wouldn't have to be good at playing an instrument. Perhaps I could come up with the musical ideas and learn how to write them down so that my musically talented friends can play my music for me...."
